Welcome to Maragate, a little slice of heaven lacking only a zip code. The major industries are hand-crafted jerky and artisan gin. Real estate prices are exorbitant. D.K. Kecskeméti’s wife paid $1.49 million for a hovel. The mayor is a dead-ringer for William Burroughs. Elvis works at the Verizon store and Dennis Hopper makes and sells mini-donuts at the Farmers Market. The police department includes two detectives who bear a close resemblance to Heath Ledger and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Chris Farley is suspected as an accomplice in the kidnapping of the Pope. And those kids on skateboards, who act like agents of angels, look a lot like the Romantic Poets Percy Bysche Shelley, Lord Byron, and John Keats, the original Eternal Sojourners. It’s not like other towns. Or is it?
